Born in Christchurch in 1951, after a short career as a teacher Jane Zusters studied at the University of Canterbury School of Fine Arts from 1974-75. In 1978 she was awarded a major Queen Elizabeth II Arts Council Grant and moved to Auckland where she works in painting, collage, printmaking, photography and ceramics. As a painter in the postmodern style, she often incorporates her photographs in collages. She has had 45 solo exhibitions, and won first prize in the Montana Art Award 1984, another Arts Council Grant in 1986, first prize in the Tokoroa Art Award in 1988 and joint winner of the Lilian Ida Smith Award in 1994. She was a guest artist in residence at Canterbury University in 1995 and in 1999-2000 she lived in London for 10 months. From 2005 she lived and worked in Christchurch.
We have records of art auction sales by Jane Zusters from 1990 and in total 117 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 79 (68%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $2,736 for Blue Pool sold by Art+Object in March 2022. This year 4 works have been offered for sale. Works by Jane Zusters are held by the Museum Of New Zealand, Christchurch Art Gallery and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
