Born in Adelaide in 1872, Norman MacGeorge studied at Adelaide's School of Design and then at the Melbourne's National Gallery Art School. Later he studied in Britain and Europe. He lectured at Melbourne University Extension classes and was also a critic for the Melbourne 'Herald' newspaper. MacGeorge adopted a strongly avant-garde attitude and vigorously opposed Sir Robert Menzies' proposal for the establishment of an Australian Academy of the Arts. On the death of his wife, their home in Ivanhoe, Victoria was bequeathed to the University of Melbourne, along with the contents of his studio. The collection includes over 270 watercolours, oil paintings and sketches by the artist, which comprehensively represent his career, from his student days at the National Gallery School in the 1890s through to his years of maturity painting along the Yarra River and the beachfront at Mentone.
