A New Zealand artist, Hilda Wiseman was born in 1894. She studied at the University of Auckland Elam School of Art under Robert Proctor (who taught at Elam from 1916 to 1920). At the completion of her studies she made linocuts and woodcuts of native flowers of New Zealand, painted in watercolour but specialised in book plate design. She designed over 100 bookplates, most of them linocuts which she printed herself. Her favourite themes were of New Zealand birds and flowers. She was Honorary Secretary of the New Zealand Ex Libris Society from 1930 until 1967. She exhibited with the Auckland Society of Arts, the Canterbury Society of Arts, the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts from 1926 and the Otago Art Society. She died in 1982 and donated her collection of several hundred bookplates to the Auckland Public Library.
The total number of works by Hilda Wiseman offered for sale by auction since 1976 is 168, of which 140 (83%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $2,661 for Anniversary Day, January 29th sold by Webb's in December 2001. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by Hilda Wiseman are held by the Auckland Art Gallery, Museum Of New Zealand and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
