Born in Victoria in 1937, Bruce Fletcher studied at Prahran College of Adult Education from 1950 to 1956 and was mentored by William Dargie. He exhibited in Melbourne in 1964 and 1967 and then in 1969 was the first artist officially appointed to cover the Vietnam conflict. With Ken McFadyen he painted the battles and daily life of the Australian army and air force in Vietnam. On his return to melbourne he took a position as lecturer in painting at Caulfield Institute of Technology, later becoming a portrait painter. In Vietanm he produced over 40 paintings and 200 drawings and his works are represented in the War Memorial in Canberra.
