About Maidie McGowan
Born in England in 1906, Maidie McGowan (nee MacWhirter) arrived in Victoria in 1920. She studied under W B McInnes at the National Gallery of Victoria School in the 1920s, and at the George Bell School in the late 1930s. She was a member of The New Group at the Athaneum Gallery in the 1930s, the Contemporary Art Society and Melbourne Contemporary Artists. She was a Past President of the Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors. She exhibited in a solo exhibition at the Victorian Artists Society in 1974 the had a number of exhibitions in Melbourne and country Victoria from 1978 to 1991.
