Jeff Carter was born in Melbourne in 1928 and although he never had any formal training in photography, he was privately tutored in journalism and writing. He became known as a photographer after publication of his photographs and articles while travelling and working around Australia from 1946 to 1949, depicting the harshness of country life after World War II. We was editor of of Outdoors and Fishing magazine from 1949 to 1954 and then travelled around Australia for the next 18 years working as a freelance photographer, contributing to Australian and international magazines such as Life, National Geographic and Paris Match.. From 1975 to 1980 he lived and worked in Europe and then continued his freelance work on return to Australia. In 2004 Jeff Carter received the Australia Council's Visual Arts Emeritus Award, and a retrospective of his work was published in 2005.
The total number of works by Jeff Carter offered for sale by auction since 2003 is 28, of which 18 (64%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $7,918 for The Little Woman, Ultimo 1959 sold by Leonard Joel in September 2017. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by Jeff Carter are held by the National Gallery of Australia, Art Gallery of NSW and a further three major public national galleries (see list below).
