Born in Melbourne in 1912, Mary MacQueen studied at the Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology and at the George Bell School. A watercolourist and print maker, she held her first exhibition in 1945 at Kozminsky Gallery in Melbourne and exhibited regularly around Melbourne, in the United States and Japan. She was the winner of numerous awards from the 1950s to the 1980s.
We have records of art auction sales by Mary MacQueen from 1975 and in total 195 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 127 (65%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,410 for Running Chooks at Whyalla sold by Christies in August 2001. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by Mary MacQueen are held by the National Gallery of Australia, National Gallery of Victoria and a further nine major public national galleries (see list below).
