Born in Brisbane in 1901, Treania Smith (nee Bennett) studied at the Max Meldrum School, Melbourne and Melbourne Technical College, where she studied sculpture. She travelled to Europe in 1928 where she studied sculpture at the Edinbugh College of Art. She reurned to Australia in late 1930 and continued further studies in sculpture at the East Sydney Technical College. She exhibited at the Macquarie Gallery in the 1930s, and became co-owner of the gallery in 1938, retiring from the gallery in 1976.
