Born in Adelaide in 1875, Herbert Babbage moved to New Zealand as a child. He studied at Wanganui Technical College and under the artist D E Hutton and in London and Paris from 1904, returning to New Zealand about 1909 where he exhibited in Wellington, Wanganui and New Plymouth.

The total number of works by Herbert Babbage offered for sale by auction since 1990 is 43, of which 37 (86%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $3,674 for Mending the Nets sold by International Art Centre in August 2017. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2022. Works by Herbert Babbage are held by the Suter Art Gallery.
