Born in Sydney in 1932, Lawrence is an artist and musician. studied at the Royal College of Music in Lonond and under his father, artist George Feather Lawrence (1901 - 1981). Principally a landscape artist, he has exhibited in Newcastle. He exhibited in solo and group shows in Sydney and Newcastle in the 1980s. As a musician he played the viola with the Tasmania Symphony Orchestra and Sydney Symphony Orchestra, and he also composed orchestral and choral works, chamber music and piano works.
