Chas Astley was born in Deptford, Kent on 12 May 1869. He studied at the Goldsmiths Institute, London and came to Australia c.1887-88 and lived in rural New South Wales before moving to Hobart. There he painted and exhibited with the Tasmanian Art Society. He moved to Queensland about 1902 and settled in Toowoomba where he became art instructor at the Toowoomba Technical College.

We have records of art auction sales by Chas Astley from 1975 and in total 26 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 15 (58%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $13,011 for A Settlers Home at Willowburn, Toowoomba, Queensland; and While the Billy Boils on The Range, Toowoomba, Queensland (2) sold by Christies in September 2011.
