Born in Salford, England, Tom Gibbons trained at the Royal College of Art in London and moved to Perth in 1955. As well as an artist he was a literary scholar and excelled in both disciplines of literature and visual art. Positions held during his career included adjunct professor in the School of Art at Curtin University of Technology and senior lecturer in English at the University of Western Australia. He founded the 'Perth Group' in 1957 with Robert Juniper, Guy Grey-Smith and Brian McKay and the other modernist artists which challenged conservative artistic boundaries in their art shows. In the 1960s he contributed reviews to The Criticand held about 12 solo exhibitions in Perth. The Lawrence Wilson Art Gallery at the University of Western Australia held a retrospective exhibition of his work in 1998. Tom Gibbons died in Perth in 2012.
