Born in Liverpool, England, studied at the bath Municipal School of Art, and taught art in London before arriving in Wellington c1900 and from 1902 was a teacher at Wellington Technical College from 1906 Herdman-Smith was the Director of the Canterbury College School of Art, Christchurch. He was also an Examiner in Art for the Education Department. A landscape and streetscape artist in watercolour and an etcher, he exhibited extensively in New Zealand, including with the South Canterbury Art Society, the Auckland Society of Arts, Canterbury Society of Arts, New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts and Otago Art Society.
