Born in Christchurch, New Zealand in 1922, Paul Olds studied at the Canterbury School of Arts. After winning a travelling scholarship he studied architecture and painting in London, and spent several years in Europe. On his return to New Zealand he became a lecturer in Fine Arts. Olds' work of the 1960s shows the influence of the cubist movement.
