A late colonial artist, William Jarrett painted landscapes in oil and watercolour in Tasmania and Victoria and New Zealand from the 1850's to 1890's. He exhibited in the Melbourne Intercolonial Exhibition in 1866 and with the New South Wales and Victorian Academies of Art in 1870.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $17,250 for Hobart Town and the Derwent from Mt Nelson sold by Sotheby's in September 1997.
