New South Wales landscape painter Frank Spears was born on 10 May 1904 in Sydney and studied at the National Art School. He was a member of the Australian Guild of Realist Artists and a Fellow of the Royal Art Society on New South Wales where he taught for 10 years. He has painted in the United States and Canada and exhibited in Vancouver in 1961. He has won several provincial art show awards for his traditional style paintings, including the prestigious Art Gallery of New South Wales’ Wynn Prize for Landscaping for Morning, North Harbour’ (Sydney) in 1959. He was a finalist in the Wynn Prize in 1961. Frank was also the subject of an Archibald Prize finalist painting by Molly Johnson in 1960. He died in Attadale, Western Australia on 21 September 1985.
