Born at sea while his parents were en route to Australia in 1917. Primarily a landscape artist working in oil, Hopgood is a naive painter who did not start painting until 1966 while recovering from a stroke. Previously a permanent army officer he lived in Broken Hill untill his death in 1992. Broken Hill Regional Gallery held a restrospective of his work in 2004.
