Born in Victoria in 1897, Kenneth MacQueen. After serving in France in World War I, he studied art at the Slade School in London. In 1919 he returned to Australia and became a farmer in the Darling Downs area of Queensland. Macqueen became known 1926 when his work was included in the exhibition of A Group of Modern Painters, held in Sydney. This exhibition led to the formation of the Contemporary Group, with whom he was to display his paintings throughout the 1930s. He was among the first Australian watercolourists to paint in a modern style, and he is noted for his simply constructed, formalised, semi-abstract landscapes.
