Born in England in 1852, Gouldsmith studied at the Bristol Government School of Art and the Royal College of Art, London, before coming to Australia in 1883. He was a member of the Royal South Australian Society of Fine Arts. In 1886 he moved to Christchurch in New Zealand where he was art master at Christ's College. He returned to England in the 1890s and died there in 1932. His work is represented in the Art Gallery of South Australia and major New Zealand collections, including the Hocken and Turnbull Libraries, and the Robert McDougall Art Gallery, Christchurch.
