Born in Altona, Germany, in 1872, Joseph Wolinski arrived in Australia via the UK in 1883, aged seven. He studied in Sydney at the Julian Ashton School and travelled to Europe where he later became Painting Master at Saville House School in Mansfield. A portraitist and landscape painter, working oils, he exhibited at the Royal Academy and in Paris and returned to Australia in 1911. In 1913 he again visited England and joined the Royal Academy Artist's Corps during World War I. He later went to the United States and exhibited at the National Academy of Design in New York, returning to Australian in 1918. In the 1930s he opened his own Art School, the Academy Wolinski.
