Born in England in 1855, Harry Gill studied at the Royal College of Art, London, prior to his arrival in Australia in 1881. He was the first principal of the South Australian School of Art in Adelaide, from this position exerting a major influence on the South Australian art scene. As honorary curator of the National Gallery of South Australia, he compiled the first catalogue of the collection. Harry Pelling Gill died in the Mediterranean when returning to England in 1916.
