Born in Melbourne in 1893, Mary Cecil Allen studied at the National Gallery School, the Meldrum School in Melbourne, and in New York and London. She was better known as a critic and lecturer than as a painter. She was also a member of the Australian Art Association and the Victorian Artists' Society.

The total number of works by Mary Allen offered for sale by auction since 1974 is 18, of which 14 (78%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $16,450 for Sorrento Hotel sold by Deutscher~Menzies in May 2001. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2019.
