Born in Italy in 1910, Virgil Lo Schiavo graduated with Bachelor of Arts from Sydney University. He taught at the Dattilo-Rubbo Art School in Sydney and at East Sydney Technical College. He was active in Australia in the 1930s and 1940s. is best known for his large mural works including the mural he painted for St Stephen’s Catholic Cathedral, Brisbane in 1942 and the mural for the Union Building, at the University of Sydney painted in 1953. He was awarded the Art Gallery of New South Wales Sulman Prize in 1945 and was a finalist in 1944, 1947, 1951, 1955 and a finalist in the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald Prize in 1947.
