Born in Scotland in 1897, John Buckland Wright arrived in New Zealand with his widowed mother and siblings in about 1908. He later went to Europe for his education, and after serving in a Franco-Scottish ambulance unit in World War I, he returned to England and learned engraving, becoming one of Britain's finest engravers. After World War II he taught graphic design and in 1953 published an authoritative reference on etching and engraving. He illustrated over 30 books and produced more than 750 engravings. Although Wright never returned to New Zealand, he retained an interest in the country through relatives and friends.
The total number of works by John Wright offered for sale by auction since 1990 is 61, of which 51 (84%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $3,767 for Bather: Laos sold by Dunbar Sloane in June 2019. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by John Wright are held by the Museum Of New Zealand, National Gallery of Victoria and a further five major public national galleries (see list below).
