Born in England in 1939, Irving arrived in Australia as a young child in 1942. He was awarded a Diploma of Art from Swinburne Technical College after studying there from 1955 to 1959 and also studied at Royal Melbourne Institute of Technology from 1960-63 and in UK and Europe from 1966-70. A painter, printmaker and designer, he has exhibited in Melbourne and Sydney, and overseas in Oxford, UK. In 1982-83 he was Artist in Residence at the Trades Hall Council, Melbourne and in 1966 he won the John McCaughey Memorial Prize, administered by the National Gallery of Victoria.
