Born in the Gisborne area of New Zealand in 1954, John Walsh studied at the University of Canterbury, and first exhibited in 2000 in Auckland. Since then he has exhibited in regularly in group and solo shows in Auckland and Wellington. He is a contemporary Maori artist and curator, and known for his portrait paintings. Among his awards is the Bank of New Zealand Portrait Award in 1977 and the Antarctica Artist-in-Residency Programme in 2007.
We have records of art auction sales by John Walsh from 2002 and in total 213 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 129 (61%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $54,138 for Pare to My Place sold by International Art Centre in August 2020. This year one work has been offered for sale. Works by John Walsh are held by the National Gallery of Victoria, Museum Of New Zealand and a further two major public national galleries (see list below).
