Born in London in 1841, Harold Brees was a painter, cartoonist, lithographer, architect and surveyor, the son of Samuel Brees who was an artist and architect. Brees lived in New Zealand for a number of years before moving to Sydney in 1858. He worked as an architect, also accepting comminssions and teaching painting, exhibiting at the Art Society of N.S.W. from 1881.
