Born in England in 1836, Albert Cooke emigrated to Victoria in 1854, initially working on the goldfields. A Colonial School painter, lithographer and illustrator, he worked for newspapers such as the 'Illustrated Australian News' and contributed to the 'Picturesque Atlas of Australia'. During the 1870s he exhibited his watercolours of Australian landscape - such as 'Port Phillip Bay' - at the Victorian Academy of Arts. In about 1890 Cooke moved to Western Australia where he produced watercolours and lithographs of local scenes.
