Born in 1954 and raised in Palmerston North, Tim Wilson was a self-taught artist, inspired at the age of 16, by the scenic landscape while on a school trip to the South Island. He was known for producing large landscapes of wild New Zealand, painted in oil. In 2015, Wilson’s one of these large works, Summer Rains in Doubtful Sound set the New Zealand record for a living artist when an international collector paid $575,000 for it. He marketed his paintings from his eponymously named gallery in Queenstown. He died in 2020 and a tribute exhibition was held in the same year at his gallery.
