Born in New South Wales in 1919, Hodgkinson studied at the Royal Art Society, Sydney, and in London. In his early period he was a traditional artist, first becoming noticed for his wartime battle scenes. After World War II he travelled to Europe and later became an industrial designer and illustrator. After winning the first Helena Rubinstein Travelling Scholarship, he was based in Spain where he exhibited with the contemporary Spanish groups.
