Born about 1785, Major James Taylor was an army officer and topographical artist stationed in Sydney from 1817 to 1822. On his return to England some of his topographical drawings were used to form a panorama of Sydney - 'Panoramic View of Sydney' - which was printed by Robert Havell and published in London in 1823.
We have records of art auction sales by James Taylor from 1974 and in total 13 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 6 (46%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $9,300 for Panorama of Sydney NSW sold by Mossgreen Auctions in June 2016. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by James Taylor are held by the Art Gallery of South Australia, National Gallery of Australia and a further four major public national galleries (see list below).
