A Melbourne artist, Bertha Merfield was born in Melbourne in 1869. She studied under E. Phillips Fox and Tudor St George Tucker at the National Gallery School from 1897-98 and in London c1910-1912. She was a pioneer of mural painting in Melbourne and was a member of Society of Mural Decorators and Painters in Tempera, based in London. Bertha Merfield was a Foundation Member of the Twenty Melbourne Painters and showed craftwork with the Victorian Artists Society. She was also a member of Melbourne Society of Women Painters and Sculptors and exhibited with the Society from 1905 to 1910.
