About John Gibb
A painter of coastal and marine subjects, John Gibb, was born in Scotland in 1831. He studied in Scotland prior to migrating to New Zealand in 1876, after 25 years as an artist painting in Scottish traditional style. He settled in Christchurch and quickly established a reputation as a painter of dramatic landscapes and seascapes, and was recognised as New Zealand's premier marine artist of the time. He also spent some years in Australia, exhibiting in Sydney at the Art Society of NSW, but later returned to New Zealand. He also exhibited in Melbourne, London and St. Louis. From 1892 until 1909 he was on the Council of the Canterbury Society of the Arts.
