Born in Sydney in 1900, Valerie Lazarus spent her student days at the Sydney Art School under Julian Ashton, followed by extensive training in Europe. She returned to Australia in 1933. She had a close friendship with George Lambert and Thea Proctor. Valerie Lazarus exhibited for the Art Gallery of New South Wales Archibald, Sulman and Wynne prizes, and was awarded landscape prize by the Royal Agricultural Society.
