Ann Broughton was born 1937 in Wallaroo, South Australia and schooled at St Peters Girls, Adelaide. She commenced a nursing qualification in 1956, but changed to a fine arts degree (sculpture) at the South Australia School of Art, where she met her future husband, sculptor Owen Broughton in 1964. She received the Clarkson Memorial prize for art modelling in 1966 and 1967 and the Contemporary Art Society prize for ceramics and sculpture in 1966. She commenced teaching night school in 1968 and on completing a Diploma of Education, she concentrated on high school teaching.
