Born in Dunnolly, Victoria in 1906, Flett studied at the National Gallery School, Melbourne in 1927-28 where he was awarded many student prizes. A watercolour artist and printmaker (etchings and woodblocks) he is best known for his colourful study of pirates inspired by Norman Lindsay. After spending some time from the early 1930s in the business world and writing on the history of the Victorian goldfields he resumed painting in the 1960s.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $1,400 for John Batman and Captain Delancy Viewing the Site of Melbourne sold by Leonard Joel in November 1989.
