Alfred Avery Forrester was born in Otago in 1895. After his marriage in 1916, the couple lived in Dunedin where Forrester received tuition from Scottish artists J. C. Veitch and W. A. Bollard. He continued his training under A. H. O'Keefe in Christchurch. In 1920 he attended the Christchurch School of Art and helped found the North Otago Art Society. Forrester moved to Oamaru and established a studio where he taught landscape, flower and fruit painting. He was a regular exhibitor with the Otago Art Society.
