Born in New Zealand in 1897, Bert Tornquist studied at the University of Auckland Elam School of Arts and the Chicago Art Institute. He became known as a commercial artist, painter, photographer and writer. As a portrait photographer from the early 1920s to the mid 1940s he captured images of many international celebrities of the era. After retiring from photography he became a full time artist and art reviewer. He exhibited with the Auckland Society of Arts in 1948 and the New Zealand Academy of Fine Arts from 1933.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $2,421 for South of Tauranga sold by Webb's in June 2004.
