South Australian oil painter Andrew Douglas Ambrose Murrell was born in Adelaide in 1945 grew up in Thebarton, South Australia, but moved to Melbourne at the young age of 16. He worked in the TV industry and after 3 years returned to Adelaide. He was introduced to the art world by a neighbor and he began collecting art. He later opened an antique shop in Strathalbyn also took up painting. He had a brief but intense career as an artist that helped him overcome alcohol addiction while in rehabilitation at a half-way house in Semaphore from 1988-89. He held a number of exhibitions which sold out quickly including at the Sailmakers Gallery in Port Adelaide. Andrew Murrell passed away on October 9, 2023 in Mannum, South Australia.

Since 1970 we have recorded only one work being sold at auction by this artist, which was in 1989.
