A watercolour artist and etcher, Crisp was born in 1879. He was active in Sydney early last century. Mainly creating landscapes and portraits in oil and watercolour, he exhibited extensively with the Royal Art Society from about 1900 and in 1909 was a judge on the committee. He had works illustrated in Art in Australia in the 1920s. He is the younger brother of artist Henry Crisp (1879 - 1951). He died in 1962.

We have records of art auction sales by James Crisp from 1979 and in total 31 works by the artist have been offered for sale, of which 25 (81%) were sold. The highest price recorded for the artist is $2,700 for 'The Vedette,' 1912 sold by Davidson Auctions in March 2019. No works have been offered for sale this year, and the last sale we have recorded for the artist was in 2023. Works by James Crisp are held by the Art Gallery of NSW and National Gallery of Australia.
