Born in England in 1925, Gleghorn arrived in Australia in 1928. Though trained as an engineer, he started painting at 24, receiving help and encouragement from William Dobell. He worked as an artist and designer in Sydney retail stores for some years. In recent years he has applied abstract expressionist methods to his experience of landscape. He was the inaugural winner of the Muswellbrook Art Prize in 1958 has three works in the Muswellbrook Shire Art Collection.
