Born in Melbourne in 1930, Brian Gilligan studied at Royal Melbourne Insitute of Technology and the National Gallery School, Melbourne under Dudley Wood. A traditional watercolourist, he exhibited in Melbourne from 1981 and won several suburban and provincial prizes. As well as being an artist he studied furniture design and operated a design business catering to architects and builders, and was President of the Inventors Association for many years.
