Born in Fingal, Tasmania in 1874, McComas studied at the Julian Ashton School in Sydney. In Australia he painted landscapes and seascapes, mainly in watercolour. He emigrated to California in 1898 where he spent the rest of his life, becoming well known in America and exhibiting at the 1913 International Exhibition of Modern Art in New York. His works are represented in the Art Gallery of NSW and in several American collections. He died in 1938.
