Born in 1807 in Birmingham, England, Burn arrived in Victoria in 1853. Nothing very much is known about this competent and important historical artist who painted mainly around Melbourne in the English style of light oil and watercolour, but he is remembered for his topographical drawings of the Victorian goldfields and his historically important views of Melbourne in the 1850s to the 1870s. He exhibited at the Victorian Society of Fine Arts in 1857 then the Victorian Academy of Arts from 1870 to 1877.
