He, along with J.C. Hoyte and C. Palmer initiated the formation of the Art Society of Auckland in 1869. he was the first Secretary and Treasurer of the Society of Artists, and exhibited with them between 1871 and 1879. In 1877 he was living on the North Shore of the eastern slopes of Mt. Victoria. He painted in oil and watercolour and some of his work is reminiscent of John Kinder. Although he painted regularly, surviving works are rare.
