Born in New South Wales in 1942, Sharp studied art and architecture in Sydney. He was a painter, cartoonist and designer, was art editor of 'Oz', and has done cartoons for a number of newspapers and magazines including the 'Bulletin' and 'Sydney Morning Herald'. Martin Sharp exhibited in London, Sydney and Melbourne, and from 1965 to 1974 travelled extensively.
