Born in England in 1835, Edmund Wimperis was apprenticed to a wood engraver, and worked for the 'Illustrated London News'. He was a professional landscape watercolourist by 1873. He visited Dunedin, New Zealand in about 1879, and exhibited with the Otago Art Society.
