Born in Hadley, England in 1820, Frederick Woodhouse was from a family of artists. His father was an artist, as were his four brothers. He studied at Sass's Academy (later "Cary's Academy"), in London and also under J. F. Herring. He came to Melbourne in 1857. He is known for painting every winner of the Melbourne Cup from 1861 to 1888 as this lucrative commission declined as advances were made in photography. From 1870 he exhibited with the Victorian Academy of the Arts and his art was seen at the Art Gallery of New South Wales exhibition Australian Art in the 1870s' in 1976 and the 1983 exhibition at the Victorian Artist's Society, Pastures and Pastimes.
