A New Zealand artist, Francis Hunt was born in Cambridge New Zealand in 1890. He learnt art at the F. Wright Academy In Auckland and the Elam School of Fine Art in the early 1930s. He became known as a portrait still life and landscape painter. During the 1940s he was active in Auckland, exhibiting with the Rutland Art Group, formed in 1935 by ex-Elam Art School students in opposition to the Art Societies.
