Born in England in 1947, Kate Smith lived in New Zealand before arriving in Australia in 1980. Apart from some lessons in printmaking in Auckland and the Gold Coast in Queensland, she is largely self taught. A painter, printmaker and potter, Smith held her first solo show in Auckland in 1974, and has since exhibited in Melbourne and Queensland.

The highest price recorded for the artist is $2,209 for Hey Big Spender sold by Lawson~Menzies (now trading as Menzies) in February 2014.
